Do I Need A Permit?

NBCA Legal Fund

With all the renovations occurring in our neighborhood many questions arise regarding the requirement for building permits in Atlanta.

Lamar Miller, the new Chair of the Land Use Committee, (formerly the Zoning Committee) advised anyone doing more than $50.00 worth of improvements to their property to seek a permit prior to beginning their project.

Miller said you should check with the Bureau of Buildings any time you:

bulletBuild a fence or shed
bulletChange your driveway
bulletAdd/extend a deck
bulletEnclose a porch
bulletRemove a tree

Another problem occurs when contractors convince homeowners that a permit is not necessary for their job then months later, when the improvements are complete and found in violation of codes the contractor has vanished and the homeowner is left to sort out a very difficult situation alone.

Bureau of Buildings number is 404-330-6150.

Our legal expenses during the TAP Associates trial and appeal amounted to about $15,000, which we have raised over the past 14 months through 243 contributions.  We are deeply grateful to everyone who helped us.  Thanks so much.

But these are not easy times for neighborhoods like North Buckhead.  Threats to our neighborhood abound and many require a quick reaction, without time for a fund raising campaign.

In the last several months we have needed legal representation for the losing Chick-fil-A fight on Midvale Drive at Roswell Road and the 2nd condo tower at Phipps Blvd at Wieuca Road.

Others will surely follow.  We need your help in defending your neighborhood.  We'd appreciate your contribution of $50 or $100 (or any amount) in addition to your $25 dues.  You can make your contribution by using the form on the back of this newsletter.

(There is no news on the TAP Associates appeal to the Georgia Supreme Court since our last newsletter.  Keep checking our web site.)
