Sewer Work and Wieuca Road Detour

As you know, Wieuca Road has been blocked for several months and detoured traffic is causing major disruptions on Pinecrest Road and Rickenbacker Way.

In an effort to get an answer to how long this will go on and to discuss other traffic issues, we(Robert Sarkissian, chair of NBCA's Traffic Committee, and Gordon Certain)  met with City officials in December.  What we learned in this meeting and subsequent discussions is that the Wieuca Road detour and work on the Veteran's Hospital Trunk Sewer Line will continue  at least until  February 28, 2002 (the date as of 1/22.)

Detoured traffic is now routed onto Pinecrest Road and Rickenbacker Way. The city is reviewing alternate detour routes to reduce the impact on these roads.  In addition, the City has painted white stop lines at the 3-way intersection of Midvale Drive and Rickenbacker Way where the stop signs were frequently ignored.

This sewer project has and will continue to affect Mountain Way.  As the project progresses, North Ivy Road will also be affected (probably in early March) in the area between Mountain Drive and Little Nancy Creek.

Further, the sewer to be replaced runs under the new sidewalks along much of Mountain Drive.  These will be torn out and replaced.  It then runs under Mountain Drive through the intersection of N Ivy Road and N Stratford Road.  Work on these segments will also result in traffic disruptions, but since the permits have not been issued by the Traffic Department, we don't yet have a schedule.  However, according to the Public Works Department the entire project is supposed to be complete by 11/30/02.

The sewer project will also involve work under Peachtree Dunwoody Road north of the Winall Down Road intersection.  We understand that this work will be done by boring under the road so traffic should not be totally disrupted.

We have asked the City to ensure that sidewalks destroyed by this project be replaced with sidewalks meeting Americans with Disabilities Act and current City standards.

Detour Hurts Local Stores

The Wieuca Road detour has deprived some local stores of their customers.  Charlotte Barclay, proprietor of the Barclay Flower Art &Tea Garden, www.nbca.org/tea.htm, 285 W Wieuca,  404-705-5900, reports the detour has devastated her drop-in business, especially during the normally busy Christmas season.  No doubt other businesses, especially those off Roswell Road, are similarly impacted.  Please go out of your way to make sure our local stores survive the detour.
