New City Seniors Benefits

Creek Bank Restoration

New Homestead Exemption
There is a new homestead exemption that goes into effect this year for low-income seniors and the   disabled. The exemption applies to school board taxes and is in the amount of $25,000 of the        assessed value of the homestead for residents who are 65 years of age or older or disabled and whose     annual household income does not exceed $25,000.  If you are eligible for this exemption, you must apply in person at the Tax Assessors Office for the county in which you live.  You may contact DeKalb County at 404-298-3061 and Fulton County at 404-224-0102 for more information and to learn what documentation you will need to apply.  Filing deadlines are May 1 for DeKalb and June 1 for Fulton.

Sanitary Service Charge Discount
Senior Citizens (65 years of age or older) in the City of Atlanta with incomes of $39,000 or less are     eligible to receive a 30% discount on the current year's Sanitary Service bill.  Applications are being accepted through May 31, 2002.  For more information, contact the Bureau of Treasury at City Hall (404-330-6430) or visit:

The City of Atlanta is working with North Buckhead neighbors impacted by the Veteran's Hospital Trunk Sewer Line Project to restore their stream banks.  These affected neighbors have requested a natural restoration of their property using coconut fabric, logs, willow stakes and native plantings.

This is ground breaking work for the city of Atlanta and progressive thinking by our neighborhood.  It will be the first time such a request has been made by a community group and the response from the city has been positive.  A natural restoration is the best choice for creek stability  and vitality.  It is a preferred solution to placing riprap (rock) along the banks, which severely retards plant growth along the banks, while a natural restoration encourages the growth of vegetation.
