By Scotty Greene (from an email to a resident)
Buckhead Community Improvement District (BCID) executive director Scotty Greene provided the following report on changes to neighborhood intersections.
The capital improvement project at Wieuca and Phipps Bvld. is one of twenty three intersections included in the Buckhead CID Intersection Program. The improvements in this program are intended to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrian and wheelchair users, to encourage walking, to better integrate motorist and pedestrian activity, to reduce the speed of traffic at intersections where pedestrians are crossing, while maintaining the general efficiency of the traffic system with better signal timing and signage.
The changes at the Wieuca/Phipps intersection are intended to improve a dangerous crossing condition for pedestrians crossing from the west Wieuca/Phipps corner to the other side of Wieuca created by the existing, large radius sweeping right turn from Wieuca onto Phipps. When the construction is completed and the new lane with

right turn option is opened, traffic should move more smoothly onto Phipps Bvld. As we are with all intersections included in this program, we will monitor function and impact and adjust the improvements where needed and practical to do so.
I am working with Gordon Certain to coordinate and make arrangements for the replacement of trees removed in the expansion of the corner park. I will also work to secure ongoing maintenance funding for the entire corner park after the new sod is planted in the area created by the intersection project.
Our planning process included representatives from neighborhoods, including the NBCA, BATMA, the City of Atlanta traffic engineering dept, Georgia Dept. of Transportation, consultant engineers for the Buckhead CID and the PEDS organization.
Our goal with these improvements was to create a better, safer balance between those who walk and those who drive in and around the Buckhead commercial area.
