Sidewalks mean money in your pocket

Maxine Rock was our association's second president, following her husband David's term, back when the North Buckhead Civic Association was called the "Eighth Ward Civic Association".

The best thing that happens when a sidewalk or trail is built near your home is that the house value immediately increases.    According to city officials, homes in Atlanta are worth from $1,500-$5,000 more when they have a sidewalk in front of them, and realtors say owners near Chastain Park's PATH trail report at least a 10 per cent boost in value for homes accessible to the trail.  Sidewalks are now in such demand that developers advertise them as an   amenity.  For example, the new Gates at

Glenridge, a pricey community on Glenridge Drive, trumpets its product as a "neighborhood with sidewalks," and the much-publicized Atlantic Station in midtown has been overwhelmed with potential buyers because it offers sidewalks and bicycle trails in front of almost every home.

Getting more money for a home with      sidewalks makes sense, because of the many benefits sidewalks provide to homeowners: safety from auto traffic, easier access, better police protection, and built-in        entertainment as soon as you walk out the door.  A sidewalk means you can stroll, jog, bike, or push a baby carriage in your own neighborhood.  If you have children, the
