Arts/Music

Art Classes in the Park, at Chastain Arts Center:  Our local arts center in beautiful Chastain Park offers a wide variety of arts classes, including painting, drawing, pottery and jewelry making. Fall classes began Sept. 15 but you can still join where there is space. There are also a number of special shorter workshops this fall,  including: Glass Bead Making (Oct. 14 and 15; Nov. 12; Dec. 13 and 22); Introduction to Painting for Total    Beginners (Oct. 23); Eraser Carving Madness (Oct. 18); Polaroid Photo Transfers (Nov. 7);  Holiday Greeting Card Workshop (Nov. 13 and 22); and for children  -- Cool Art & Hot Cocoa (Dec. 29) and Cartooning      Workshop (Dec. 6).  For information call 404-252-2927 or drop by the center at 135 W. Wieuca NW and pick up a brochure. Costs vary.  Registration for classes beginning in January starts Nov. 24.

Folk Music/Coffeehouses, at several locations. The   Atlanta Area Friends of Folk Music brings top-notch folk musicians each month to the Garden Hills Community Center  (307 Pinetree Drive in Buckhead) for an intimate, personal and low-cost concert ($10-$12).  Oct. 11 features Tom Paxton. For information call 404-371-9371.  Another nearby folk music venue is the Lena's Place Coffeehouse, which takes place on second       Saturdays at the Central Congregational Church, 2676 Clairmont Road.  Shows start at 8 with a $5 suggested donation. Singing in a Social Setting, taught by master folk      musician Frank Hamilton.  Learn to develop your unique talents in the company of others while exploring folk, world and a wide variety of accessible music.  All levels of singers and potential singers welcome, as are         accompanying instruments.  Frank Hamilton has sung with the Weavers, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and many other greats.  Classes are ongoing, on Sunday afternoons.  For further information, call Frank and Mary Hamilton at 404-296-1582.

Meditation for Everyone, at the Garden Hills Community Center.  Learn how to meditate with Gen Mondrub of the Rameshori Buddhist Center, in a beautiful, natural location. Classes are ongoing, on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. For information go to www.MeditationForEveryone.org or  call 404-378-8599.  Small donation suggested.

Environment

River Rendezvous, starting at Oglethorpe University, Sat. Nov. 8.  Help test the water quality of our local streams and creeks, in this annual environmental event. Trees Atlanta hosts their 4th Annual Tree Sale, Saturday Oct. 18, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Piedmont Park, Education Complex. The Education Center complex in Piedmont Park is located just west of Monroe Drive off of Park Drive. For information, go to www.treesatlanta.org.

Miscellaneous


Cooking Classes at the new location of Cook's Warehouse in Brookhaven. The fall semester starts in October, with a wide variety of classes from pastry to pasta. For the complete schedule, call 404-949-9945 or go to www.cookswarehouse.com.  Prices vary but assistantships are available - work in a class and earn credit toward future classes.
