Canada Geese at Lakemoore

By Nancy Jones

In the spring we had a pair of Canadian geese raise three offspring at the Lakemoore lake.  This was a very cute family and we all enjoyed watching the babies grow up into full fledged adults.  Several neighbors began feeding them which raises some concerns considering they are wildlife and not domestic animals.  The biggest problem is that they began to associate people and people in cars with food.  So they would waddle out into the road begging food.  This is very dangerous.  Apparently, one of the geese lost its life from being hit by a car.  They even crossed Roswell Road.
Feeding wildlife encourages them to beg instead of foraging for natural foods on their own.  Also, they can be very aggressive.....what a shame if they bit someone and animal control had to be called.  Humans often think they are doing wildlife a favor by feeding them but it is not true!  Wildlife needs to be wild....for their own well being.  If they return next year I hope we can enjoy them without any problems.
