Nancy Creek Tunnel Report--continued

(Continued from page 8)

A: The liner forms must be left in place for a few days until the concrete sets.  Then, since the grouting relies on backpressure that the lining provides, the liner must further cure for about 4 weeks until the concrete reaches strength.
Q: During negotiations, the City agreed to supply power to the Contractor in consideration for a reduction in the contract price of $1,900,000.  How is this turning out?
A; Due to tax exemptions and lower consumption than anticipated, the City's cost has been $900,000 so far with an anticipated amount of $500,000 to come.
Q: The contract calls for a Contingency Amount of $7,600,000.  How much has been spent?
A: About $1,000,000.
Q: How can we be sure that the ground water
table(s) will be restored?
A: There is no certainty however, this same situation occurred with the construction of the Cobb Tunnel,

Nancy Creek's cousin on the north side of the Chattahoochee.  There, monitoring wells show a dramatic rise in ground water levels through the rock layer as soon as the grouting operation is complete.  When the groundwater level reaches the soil interface, the rate of replenishment slows but continues its upward rise.  Since the rock, soil and rainfall conditions are the same on one side of the river as the other, I believe that the results will be the same.

Reporting Water Leaks

By Gordon Certain

If you have a water leak, report it as follows:

  • During business hours - 404-658-6500
  • 24x7 (and for leaks with no street address -- leaking fire hydrants) - 404-658-7220.

Recently I got a water bill for $1,268.76 (!) for just two months of water/sewer service.  It was due to a leaky water meter, the City's problem, but it took several weeks for them to fix it.  The City will be adjusting my bill.  If you have a problem requiring an adjustment, please contact me at 404-231-1192/Gordon@nbca.org and I'll tell you what to do.  (Or, call Councilmember Howard Shook's office at 404-330-6050.)
