Police Report / Crime Prevention

By Gordon Certain

There were several police-related issues mentioned at the May "Citizens Advisory Council" meeting held by Buckhead's Zone 2 Police Precinct:

  • Mail theft is becoming increasingly common -- pick up your mail from your mailbox promptly and don't put outgoing mail in your box (and, if you do, don't put up the flag).  Note that mail theft is more common on cul-de-sac streets.  Be safe -- take your mail to a post office drop box.
  • Don't leave notebook computers, cell phones, or brief cases in your parked car.
There have been a series of break-ins in residential North Buckhead in which unlocked cars were entered and locked cars had windows broken and then were entered.  These break-ins were more common on less-traveled cul-de-sac streets.
  • If you have questions/concerns for the police, you may contact the local precinct directly at ZoneTwo@AtlantaPD.org
This e-mail address is particularly applicable if you have experienced a loss, perhaps a theft of an item from your carport and you wonder to yourself, "why bother filing a police report?".  If you decide not to file a report, you should still e-mail the police and

let them know that you have had a problem.  The police put their patrol resources where they think the problems are -- if you don't tell them, how will they know?

  • Several auto thefts have occurred at Buckhead gas stations -- don't leave your keys in the car.
  • Door to door solicitation by non-profits is not illegal, but criminals often pose as legitimate solicitors -- if you have concerns about a suspicious person, call 911 immediately, give them a description and the police will check them out.
  • Staffing of the Zone 2 Precinct is considerably below ideal levels.  These staffing levels will be bolstered somewhat when June graduates from the Police Academy join the force.  Even then, staffing will barely exceed the levels prevailing at the beginning of last year.
I believe traffic enforcement has suffered as a result of this decreased staffing.  Major Spillane (Zone Two Commander) has asked us to report chronic speeding and other traffic problems to him -- if the problem appears to be significant, he will ask that "Special Operations" be brought in to perform enforcement actions.  Use the e-mail address ZoneTwo@AtlantaPD.org to request enforcement.  (Please send a CC to NorthBuckhead@Yahoo.com.)
