There are different kinds of "seniors"…seniors in high school, seniors in college, senior citizens. It is the latter group that this "solution" is about. Retirees may sometimes lack stimulation in their lives: places to go, people to meet, new things to learn. To leave an exciting workplace in order to do housework or yard work all the time can be dull. This summer, I attended the Emory Academy for Retired Professionals. This is part of Emory's Continuing Education Program. It is on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Courses are offered at 10:00 AM-11:00 AM, and at 11:15 AM-12:15 PM. About seven or eight courses are offered for each time period. The courses I took are typical. I enrolled in Personal Finance; Geology; New York, New York; and 6 Movies. Now I know that there are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, and what they are. I am more familiar with the layout of New York City and the beauty of the Frick Museum. In my 6 Movies class, there was spirited discussion about Terrence Howard and "Hustle and Flow", but we all agreed the quality of the acting in the movie was

great. My classes were anything but dull. One thing I learned for next time was, I don't have to take four classes. I could take three (or even fewer). There is a fall quarter coming up, with interesting new course offerings. Emory Academy is open to anyone regardless of age (the people I saw there looked like retirees like myself, however). It is only $69 a quarter, or $234 for a whole year. For more information about the Academy, you may call Seymour Lavine at 404-872-5569 or Mary Cobb Callahan at 404-727-5483. The general phone number for Emory Continuing Education is 404-727-6000. Their website is at www.cll.emory.edu. In the book The Once and Future King, by T.H. White, the wizard Merlin says to the boy Arthur, "The best thing for being sad is to learn something. That is the only thing that never fails…Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting." Good advice for both young and not-so-young.
