Our Kids Need a Great Place to Play in North Buckhead!

 A Playground Committee has been set up within the North Buckhead Civic Association.  Our aim is to establish a suitable playground or playgrounds within our community.

The committee was formed due to the sad fact that there is not one public or private playground in North Buckhead established primarily for our families.

 The steps we have undertaken are as follows:

bulletLocate suitable sites for playgrounds;
bulletIf on public land, work in partnership with the City of Atlanta to build and maintain the playground;
bulletIf on private land, work with the neighborhood building and maintaining the playground;
bulletIn all cases there will be help needed from within the community for both fundraising and playground design.

At the moment, while continuing to review a number of other sites, we are focusing our efforts on lobbying the City of Atlanta to include a playground within the grounds of the park to be established off Peachtree Dunwoody Road (maps below).

KaBOOM!

Visit the KaBOOM! website at www.kaboom.org to gather research and resources about playgrounds.

"KaBOOM!, a national non-profit that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America, believes that play counts too.

Painted hands

Play is how kids learn to run, jump and swing. But they also learn how to negotiate, imagine and respect one another; how to think and plan without an adult telling them what to do. Kids build character as well as muscle through play. It is an essential part of their development and it is an old fashion solution to many of the modern day epidemics facing our children including obesity, anxiety, poor academic achievement and anti-social behavior.

Play also builds community. Cities and towns that fund, build, maintain and insure an abundance of time and space for play are healthier. A playground down the street becomes the gathering place for all generations and increases property values in the neighborhood. A community that demonstrates their belief in children and young families attracts new business and residents. Ultimately, a playful city is a healthy, happy, more productive city." - quoted from KaBOOM!'s website

New Playgrounds Committee

From the July 2007 North Buckhead Newsletter

Would you like to be able to walk to the park with your kids? Are you looking for another selling point when listing your house? There’s hope on the horizon. In June, North Buckhead neighbors formed a new Playgrounds Committee to address one of our neighborhood’s significant deficiencies — there are no public playgrounds in North Buckhead. With the exception of the playground at Chastain Park, all existing city playgrounds are located south of our large neighborhood. To put it another way, the entire northern part of Atlanta has PDS (playground deficiency syndrome) — see the amazing map below:
