Northern Water Snake - 8/24/09 - " These were taken in Nancy Creek on the
East side of Chastain Park near the intersection of Interlochen
and Lake Forrest. This is a Northern Banded Water Snake eating
what appears to be a catfish.
Please let people know not to kill these
snakes. Many think they are copperheads. They are not. They
are non-venomous."
-- Robert Varn [Northern water snakes are non-venomous,
grow to as long as four feet and bear their young live.] See

Hawk - 6/23/09 - " A beautiful hawk
landed on a play area I constructed for my kids the morning after I
completed the build. From what I was able to research, I think it may
have been a Cooper's Hawk, an uncommon find in GA. If so, this is an
even cooler sighting within the city limits. Confirmation of the
identification is certainly welcome!"

Wild Turkey - 5/30/09 - "
The turkey would come to my bird feeder on Kenbrook last winter!
[Photo from Feb. 28.] I couldn't believe it when I saw it.....my dogs were going crazy
when they saw it (I have 4 dogs).
Kenbrook is off Powers Ferry a mile past Chastain Park, so not
really North Buckhead. My sister lives on Carmain, and is convinced
this is the same turkey I saw....but there may be more!
I am totally amazed at the wildlife where I live...I'm on Long
Island Creek, and it's like being in the mountains. I just moved
here in December."

Wild Turkey - 5/21/09 - "This wild turkey is
huge. It could be three feet in total length. I took these
pictures in my backyard [on Mathieson Drive about 1/3-mile west of the
Tower Place 100 tower}. She actually flew pretty high up in the tree.
Until my daughter got her bird book out we were unsure what it was."
-- Kim Kahwach, president of the Buckhead Forest Civic Association.

Copperheads |
It’s that time of year…. As the weather warms up the
snakes are waking up. Just this week-end we found a huge
copperhead in our front yard on Land O Lakes drive, next to the creek.
Please make sure people keep their eyes open especially with young
children. Here is are some pictures of the snake we found (it was
shedding its skin). -Amelia & Todd Schaffner

Raccoon |
A resident of Old Ivy Road writes:
(Left) I used to have a lot of raccoons around my place.
They are very bold and will come right up to your door as if they're
trying to get in.
(Right) I'm attaching a photo of Juan and Roberto, the
basso profundo duo who lived in my pond the last couple of years. Talk
about making some noise -- once those two got going you literally could
not carry on a conversation! Alas, I think they succumbed to a coyote or
some other predator who valued frog meat above the opera. |
