North Buckhead residents and the North Buckhead Civic
Association are funding and volunteering their Saturdays to build North Buckhead's Habitat
for Humanity house. Habitat representatives say that they believe this is the first time a
neighborhood, as opposed to a company or a church, has sponsored a Habitat house in
Atlanta. We are special! And you can help by helping us build it. North Buckhead Habitat Volunteers
Good NewsWe now have an address for our house: 91 Brown Avenue, in SE Atlanta near Jonesboro Road, between I-75 and the Federal Prison, about a mile SE from the University Avenue exit on I-75. (Map instructions below.) We also have our new homeowner: Shanita Silas and her eight-year-old daughter Ashley Silas. They currently live in an apartment in SE Atlanta near Moreland. Coincidentally, Shanita works in near our neighborhood at the Kroger at Peachtree and Piedmont. Both Ashley and Shanita were at our North Buckhead Civic Association's Spring Fling street party last Sunday. They are really nice people. You can see pictures of the Ashley and Shanita at our Spring Fling on our web site. Our Volunteer Coordinator: Christina WesterChristina is helping us get additional volunteers. Our House Leader: Henry Grimes (Cell phone 4/861-8495)Our Habitat house involves work on seven Saturdays, starting on June 12 and ending on July 31 (with no work on July 3). Our Habitat "House Leader" is Henry Grimes, who lives in Dunwoody. Henry and his wife Gail were at Spring Fling party. Henry will lead the volunteers in building the house. Henry said he may adjust the following schedule somewhat, but this may give you an idea of what is involved week by week. ScheduleThe project workday is 8:00 until 4:00. Approximately 35 volunteers are needed on the first day, about 25 per Saturday thereafter. Lunch will be provided. Water will be provided. A portable toilet will be on-site. Habitat provides the tools. You provide your own work clothes. Experience is not necessary. We will meet each day at 7:00 AM at Sarah Smith School on Old Ivy to organize car pools. If you miss the carpool, meet us at the warehouse or the site. Site: 91 Brown Avenue: driving instructions we provided earlier don't work! -- streets have been closed. Instead use these instructions:
No work is cancelled in advance due to bad weather -- Henry makes the final decision about if the day is shortened or cancelled. Habitat provides insurance which is supplemental to the volunteers own insurance and provides basic coverage for volunteers with no insurance.
Notes: We Need Help!We need help in three categories: construction workers, lunch-providers and lunch funders (while we have amassed $45,000 for the house, we could use $1,000 or $2,000 for lunch and cokes). You may sign up for one day or several days or most days. Please e-mail me if you have questions, or if you want, call me at 404-231-1192 after 4:00 until 8:00 or at 404-219-2818 during the day. Currently we have 41 potential volunteers. I hope we will hear from you, our North Buckhead neighbors. However, if we don't have enough volunteers for the first day by May 28, I will contact Henry. He says there are plenty of people waiting in line to work on our Habitat house -- but unlike us, they don't have the funds to start a house. Please contact me in the next few days. Specifically, I need to know if you want to help and, if so, how much. I am building a schedule of volunteers by day. If you have specific day(s) you want to work, I will reserve them for you. We need to have the most people on the first two days, so if you want to work then, it is especially important to hear from you. Lunch is also important. If you want to help, let me know. If you have additional questions or want to talk, e-mail me or call. Visit our web site here to read about those who we thank for contributing funds for this house. Gordon Certain
